Tech Alumna Named Top Rural Educator

Arkansas Tech University alumna Kathy Rusert has been named the 2012 Arkansas Rural Teacher of the Year.

The annual award, which is presented by the Arkansas Rural Education Association and sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, is based upon the quality and depth of answers to questions in the areas of professional biography, educational history, professional development, community involvement, teaching philosophy, education issues and the teaching profession.

Rusert earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Arkansas Tech in 1987. She has taught in the Acorn School District for the past 25 years.

"My philosophy is that teachers should be equipped to challenge students of all abilities and interests," said Rusert in a news release from the Arkansas Rural Education Association. "I do this by making sure that all students apply knowledge learned in the classroom with hands-on activities to reinforce learning."

Rusert was previously named Walmart teacher of the year in 2005 and one of five 2012 Project Learning Tree national outstanding educators.
